Jake's Story

Sharon Fulwood and her eight-year old son Jake have regularly made the trek from the Sunshine Coast to stay at Ronald McDonald House at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.

Jake was born with spina bifida and has undergone numerous medical tests and procedures, including eight operations on his spine, bowel and bladder at the hospital.

Sharon and Jake have often needed to stay in Brisbane for extended periods of time for ongoing treatment.  Without Ronald McDonald House, they would be forced to pay for expensive hotel accommodation.

"In our first year we stayed 96 days, the second year we stayed more than 130, and after that we have been to the House so many times that I have just stopped counting," Sharon said.

Sharon has often stayed on her own, but sometimes is joined by her husband Bryan and their two other children Ryan and Emma.

"The House is an absolute godsend and I don't know how Jake and I would have coped without it over the past five years," she said.
